Clear-Vax set 36: USAAF, World War II, part 2 (1/48 scale)

1. Lockheed P-38J/M. Suggested kits: MRC/Academy P-38J or P-38M.

The Clear-Vax canopy is designed for display in the open position; therefore no side windows are supplied, as they retract into the fuselage. The windscreen is best fitted in its entirety. Cut the cowling from kit part D8 and fit it inside the Clear-Vax windscreen.
Suggested references: Squadron/Signal In Action 109; 'The Lockheed P-38', by Bodie (Widewing).
2. North American P-51D. Suggested kit: Tamiya P-51D.

This canopy is designed for display in the open position. Note on the drawing how the rear section sits on the fuselage. Using the kit part as a guide, fabricate the curved support piece from plastic and install in the rear of the Clear-Vax canopy.
Suggested references: Squadron/Signal In Action No.45; Aerodetail 13.
3. North American P-51D "Dallas" canopy. Suggested kit: Tamiya P-51D.

This canopy fits in the same manner as canopy 2.
4. Curtiss P-40M / Kittyhawk III. Suggested kits: Mauve P-40M or Kittyhawk III.

The Clear-Vax canopies are supplied to be displayed in the open position. Using the drawing as a guide, fabricate canopy rail detail from heat-stretched sprue and thin plasticard, and install on top of the kit canopy sills. Use the kit rear side windows.
Suggested reference: Squadron/Signal In Action No.26.
5. Convair B-24J Liberator. Suggested kit: Monogram B-24J.

In order to fit the Clear-Vax main canopy, carefully cut away the framing moulded onto the kit fuselage at the lines marked X and Y. The "high hat" mid upper turret canopy and astrodome directly replace the kit parts. Three alternative styles of nose blisters are supplied. The position of the larger blisters is marked on the drawing with a dotted line.
Suggested reference: Squadron/Signal In Action No.80.
6. North American P-51B "Malcolm hood". Suggested kit: Tamiya P-51B.

This canopy is designed for display in the open position. Note on the drawing the extra details to be added, for example the whip aerial and the canopy rails.
Suggested references: Squadron/Signal In Action No.45; Detail & Scale P-51 Mustang (part 1).
7. North American P-51B. Suggested kit: Tamiya P-51B.

The Clear-Vax canopy directly replaces the kit part. If you build the canopy in the open position, we suggest that for better scale accuracy you fabricate rear hinges from wire, and fill in the corresponding area in the kit fuselage. Suggested references: Squadron/Signal In Action 45; P-51 Mustang in Color (Squadron/Signal); Detail & Scale P-51 Mustang (part 1).
8. Curtiss P-40N Warhawk. Suggested kit: Mauve P-40N.

The Clear-Vax canopies are supplied for display in the open position. Using the drawing as a guide, fabricate canopy rails from heat-stretched sprue and thin plasticard, and install on top of the kit canopy sills. Note that we have omitted the extra framing on the left side of the windscreen, as not all P-40Ns carried it. Add this framing if required.
Suggested reference: Squadron/Signal In Action No.26.
